What’s Right About Your Kid!

One of the best parts of my job is talking with kids, parents and teachers. These conversations are invaluable, providing insight that helps us take care of our Wylie ISD family. As we approach STAAR testing, I’ve noticed many parents expressing concerns about their children’s anxiety (and their own!) because of the tests. It’s understandable; no one wants their child to struggle. 

But let me reassure you, it’s going to be okay. How we, as adults, discuss, react to, and outwardly express emotions about the test can significantly impact our kids’ confidence and stress levels. As parents, you have the power to continue to provide a positive foundation for students, even when it comes to the STAAR test. 

Remember, these tests represent only a fraction of a student’s academic journey. The STAAR is just one measure of their progress, not a defining factor – your kiddo is more than a test score. Drawing from discussions I’ve had with a few parents and students, we have some advice that may be helpful for families concerned about STAAR. 

FOCUS ON GROWTH

Let’s shift our focus to student growth. In the end, that’s what matters. Every student progresses at their own pace, and we’re here to support them every step of the way. Students take progress assessments during the school year that mirror the questions on the STAAR, and our kids grow all year long. Our teachers are experts at using various data sources, including STAAR, to help students improve academically. Education is a journey, and we’re preparing them for future success.

PRACTICE ALL YEAR LONG

In Texas, we love high school football! Many hours of practice, preparation, strength building, film watching, and personal improvement happen before the teams take the field each Friday night. Because of the work during the season, the players confidently take the field, ready to take on their opponent and give it their best. 

STAAR is like the academic version of Friday Night Lights! Our lessons, practice, and support help grow children throughout the year so they are ready to do their best on test day. By the time the STAAR test rolls around, students are confident and prepared to showcase their knowledge. We want our students to approach the test with the same enthusiasm as a Friday night football game – prepared and proud.

AVOID COMPARISON

We have all been there, the piano prodigy performs right before our kid follows up with Three Blind Mice. The home run hitter that is a foot taller than your baseball player bats cleanup for your team. The dancer that the instructor uses as the example of grace and elegance is in your kid’s class (and your kid is more interested in the snacks and socializing). 

Please hear me, parents, EVERYONE has strengths and interests that make them special. Part of the Wylie Way is to find those strengths and interests, grow them and match them with a school-related experience that makes students happy, hopeful and engaged.

DISCOVER THEIR STRENGTHS & INTERESTS

If you have been to a robotics competition, you will understand that these kids are just as passionate, dedicated and focused as any athlete on a sports team. The same goes for fine arts, agriculture, and gaming teams that wear their school logos and compete. Match strengths with interests, find a club, group, or team that fosters those interests and watch the magic happen.

FOCUS ON WHAT’S RIGHT ABOUT YOUR KID

During a Wylie Way Day activity, Wylie East Raider Abi Burch crafted her “Personal Mission Statement.” She wrote, “I strive to provide hope to future generations within the classroom so they can become the best person they can be!” 

Abi’s passion for teaching led her to our future teachers program, WETeach, her home away from home. She said, “I love helping others succeed and help them reach their highest potential and the WETEACH program provided the perfect space for me to do that.”

Abi is a great kid and was born to be a teacher. According to her Achievement Profile, her strengths include Honesty, Love, Fairness, Gratitude, Spirituality, Achievement, Dependability and Organization. She is the equivalent of the piano prodigy or home run hitter in the field of education. I promise – if we can find their strengths and focus on “What’s Right About Your Kid” students can experience the same hope, well-being, and happiness as Abi.  

Research tells us that kids choose people, not programs. The relationships your children have with their teachers are the big reasons kids choose and stay in a program. Abi’s teacher, Jill Hill, is a big reason she chose and continues to participate in WETeach. 

“Mrs. Hill took me in as a scared freshman during COVID and provided me with love and comfort without her even knowing me and she has taught her students to treat others the same way, which continuously provides warmth and a sense of togetherness between her students,” Abi shared.  

As we navigate through STAAR testing, let’s also remember the critical role teachers play in student success. It is why we uphold the Wylie Way standard that every student has at least one positive relationship with an adult on campus. Our teachers are unparalleled in their dedication and care for our students, actively striving to help students discover their strengths.

Una de las mejores partes de mi trabajo es hablar con estudiantes, padres de familia y maestros. Nuestras lecciones, práctica y apoyo ayudan a los estudiantes a crecer durante todo el año para que estén listos para dar lo mejor de sí el día del examen. Cuando llega el examen STAAR, los estudiantes tienen confianza y están preparados para demostrar sus conocimientos. Queremos que nuestros estudiantes afronten el examen con el mismo entusiasmo que un partido de fútbol del viernes por la noche: preparados y orgullosos.

EVITE LA COMPARACIÓN

Todos hemos pasado por eso, el prodigio del piano actúa justo antes de que nuestro hijo siga con Three Blind Mice. El jonronero que es un pie más alto que los bates de su jugador de béisbol. Parte de lo que hacemos en Wylie Way es encontrar esas fortalezas e intereses, desarrollarlas y conectarlas con una experiencia relacionada con la escuela que haga que los estudiantes estén felices, esperanzados y comprometidos.

DESCUBRA LAS FORTALEZAS E INTERESES DE SU HIJO

Si ha asistido a una competencia de robótica, comprenderá que estos niños son tan apasionados, dedicados y centrados como cualquier atleta de un equipo deportivo. Lo mismo ocurre con los equipos de bellas artes, agricultura y juegos que usan los logotipos de sus escuelas y compiten. Combine fortalezas con intereses, encuentre un club, grupo o equipo que fomente esos intereses y observe cómo sucede la magia.

CONCÉNTRESE EN LO MEJOR PARA SU HIJO

Durante una actividad de Wylie Way Day, Wylie East raider, Abi Burch, elaboró ​​su “Declaración de misión personal”. Ella escribió: “¡Me esfuerzo por brindar esperanza a las generaciones futuras dentro del aula de clase para que puedan convertirse en las mejores personas posibles!”

Ella es el equivalente al prodigio del piano o al jonronero en el campo de la educación. Las investigaciones nos dicen que los niños eligen personas, no programas. Las relaciones que sus hijos tienen con sus maestros son las principales razones por las que los niños eligen y permanecen en un programa. La maestra de Abi, Jill Hill, es una de las principales razones por las que Abi eligió y continúa participando en WETeach.

“La maestra Hill me acogió cuando era una estudiante de primer año asustada durante el COVID y me brindó amor y consuelo sin siquiera conocerme y les ha enseñado a sus alumnos a tratar a los demás de la misma manera, lo que continuamente brinda calidez y un sentido de unión entre sus alumnos”, Abi compartió.

Mientras navegamos por las pruebas STAAR, recordemos también el papel fundamental que desempeñan los maestros en el éxito de los estudiantes. Es por eso que defendemos el estándar Wylie Way de que cada estudiante tenga al menos una relación positiva con un adulto en la escuela. Nuestros maestros son incomparables en su dedicación y cuidado por nuestros estudiantes y se esfuerzan activamente por ayudarlos a descubrir sus fortalezas.
