It was the beginning of my 8th-grade year and the first day of school in 1982.
“Eye of the Tiger” was at the top of the music charts, and my buddy, Robert Harris, was the proud owner of a “Trapper Keeper,” to the envy of his classmates. For those not in the know, the Trapper Keeper was the ultimate notebook with every single box checked for a kid target audience. See as follows: covers of beach scenes, pets, and beyond. They opened flat, included folders (wow), and had the glorious sliding binder rings constantly closed and opened during class. We were a good time for our teachers, I must say. Since then, we have had advances in school supply technology, but none as revolutionary.
A new notebook with built-in teacher-patience-testing capabilities, a fresh pair of sneakers, and a class schedule are signs of my favorite time of the year, BACK TO SCHOOL!!!! According to the Wylie ISD 2022-23 School Calendar, the first day of school is August 11, and I cannot wait to see your kiddos with fresh school supplies and hopes for a great upcoming school year.
This year is shaping up to be the best one yet. The campuses and school district are putting the finishing touches on plans to welcome your kiddos. Keeping you informed of our plans is one way to begin this engaging and hopeful school year prepared and confident.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIR
We may not begin the new year with a Trapper Keeper, but starting school with the tools needed to help students feel prepared for class is essential.
If a Wylie ISD family should need support in providing school supply needs for their children, we have you covered. Thanks to the generous support of our community, we have plenty of brand-new school supplies to meet the needs of our students. The annual Wylie ISD Back to School Fair is Saturday, Aug. 6, from 8-10 a.m. at The Cross Church. Students with financial needs currently enrolled in Wylie ISD are welcome to attend to receive free school supplies and backpacks. Additionally, the Full Spectrum Salon will be there, providing free haircuts to students before our return to school.

THE WYLIE WAY!
We do not take for granted the incredible support and partnerships we have with our parents and community members.
The Wylie Way was created, supported, and sustained by our families, our faculty, and our community. We are a school district that holds our core values, character education development, and positive relationships to the same standard of excellence we do our academics. Thank you for the encouragement and excitement you give to help make our schools places our kids can grow in their hope, well-being, and engagement. Please visit our website to learn more about The Wylie Way.
SAFETY & SECURITY
In Wylie ISD, safety and security are always our priority. At the end of last school year, we promised to communicate what safety and security look like in our district before we head into the new year. That information is coming – please keep an eye out for another blog post from me in the first week of August.
STUDENT MEALS FOR 2022-23
Over the past couple of school years, a federal waiver and funding allowed Wylie ISD to provide free meals for all students. This waiver recently expired, and the district will no longer be able to offer free meals for all. Beginning this school year, students not participating in the free and reduced-meal program will be required to begin paying for meals again.
If you believe your family may qualify for free or reduced meals, we encourage you to fill out an application as soon as possible. The online application is available in Skyward Family Access, and paper applications may be picked up at the Wylie ISD Student Nutrition office (200 Pirate Drive, Wylie, TX 75098). Want more information? Visit wylieisd.net/mealbenefits.
GET THE APP!
The Wylie ISD district app is the “one-stop shop” for Wylie ISD parents.
The app allows you to access student information, grades, attendance, and more. The app also features bus routes, sports schedules, etc. Search for “Wylie ISD” in either the App Store or Google Play Store. Signing in is not required to use the app or customize the app. Instead, it grants you access to your student’s data.
As much as I miss it, we can’t bring back 1982 or make the Trapper Keeper the go-to school supply that will compete with today’s high-tech gadgets, but we can prepare you and your students for a successful start to school with the tools and information you need to succeed, the Wylie Way. Welcome to the new school year; we can’t wait to start!
