In 2020-21 Wylie ISD was one of the only districts in North Texas to begin school in person on day one. We were featured nationally on CBS This Morning, and helicopters from local news coverage hovered above our campuses as students who chose “in-person” learning entered our buildings. We began the year with 50 percent of students attending in person, that percentage had jumped to a bold 80% when we wrapped up the school year and the Class of 2021 crossed the stage.
In 2021-22, the school was entirely in-person, but the psychological and physical remnants of COVID-19 and the academic gaps remained. Despite fear and learning gaps, Wylie ISD boldly grew in record student enrollment and academic achievement numbers. I felt similar—the same fear and concerns that stressed us out in the years after COVID.
I don’t know about you, but the first day of 2023-24 felt completely different. It felt like the years before COVID-19. Kids, teachers, principals, parents, and many more felt a little more BOLD with confidence and courage that this year might be different than our recent past. It felt amazing. It felt similar, but similar in a good way! I hope you feel the same way. I hope you can join us by courageously living the values with passion, purpose, and a plan, the Wylie Way!
