From August 2016 to October 2017, student enrollment in Wylie ISD has increased by more than 1000 students. This growth is a result of more families moving to our community and more economic development in surrounding areas. It’s been exciting to see our city thrive. Unfortunately, change brings challenges. In our case, we have been faced with one daunting new realization—we have more traffic than we have ever had. With the projected construction of thousands of new homes being built in our school district over the next few years, the trials of growth are part of our reality. For this reason, Wylie ISD is about to begin a comprehensive traffic study designed to help us plan for the future.
As always, safety is our first priority. However, we also want to ensure that we are operating as efficiently as possible. When it comes to our routes for drop-off and pick-up for our kiddos, we are committed to making plans which allow our students a secure and reliable method of transportation.
While some things are simply too impractical or expensive to address, our goal is to improve where we can. While it may sound like an ideal solution, it is not cost effective to build larger parking lots at elementary schools. Regardless of how “big” we build, there will never be enough lanes to get everyone on and off a campus without a waiting line for student drop-off and pick-up. However, with your help, we can work to make decisions which will guarantee that campus parking, student pick-up and drop-off stations, and bus routes are as safe and efficient as possible.
What This Study Will Provide
-
Bus route analysis regarding safety efficiency, providing suggestions for faster route planning.
-
Analysis of campus parent pick-up and drop-off and parking as well as student parking at both high school campuses.
-
Consideration of future construction including new school construction, impact of the new Collin College development, future subdivisions, and commercial construction.
Once we obtain the data and input that we need, we will share the information with city governments and Collin County representatives to help aid in the development of their long-range traffic plans. By working together, we can all help to make sure that our kids are safe—this is our number one priority.
While we want your direct feedback, most of the study will take place in our parking lots and driveways. Traffic engineers will watch drop-off and pick-up procedures and will take notes on all aspects of the process. They will also talk to principals and PTA members and ask questions regarding what works and what doesn’t work. Some of their findings may be simple fixes, while others may be cost prohibitive.
In addition to these plans, we also want your opinions and suggestions. We have a very short survey where you can share your thoughts and suggestions about traffic and parking at your child’s school. If you have some time to offer your suggestions, we would greatly appreciate it.
