It had been a stressful morning filled with phone calls, meetings, and deadlines. I get out of my car, put my phone in my pocket, and turn around to find a smiling fourth grade Watkins Wrangler on “door duty” who welcomes me with a smile and hug. I take a few minutes to help with milk cartons, talk with the assistant principal, and debate a few kids about the virtues of a favorite sports team. This is the start of a visit to Watkins Elementary, and it is part of a goal I have set for myself—I vow to visit every Wylie ISD campus every week. I walk down the brightly lit hallway, receive no less than twenty high fives, and discuss missing teeth with a kid who explains how oral surgery works. Then, a smiling second grader with a ponytail and glasses grabs my hand and asks if I can walk her to class, just like I did a few weeks ago. I smile at her and say, “Of course.” It is in that moment that whatever problems existed before I walked onto the campus become a distant memory. The hugs I get make everything else disappear. Life is great!
I have the best job in the world. Though it comes with a large amount of responsibility, the “moments” with students and teachers make it all worthwhile. I would love to be able to share this joy with you.
Students benefit from having positive adult role models who value and love them. Volunteering as a mentor, becoming a member of the PTA, or helping with the Wylie ISD Education Foundation are three ways to live the dream in Wylie ISD. If you’re interested in getting involved, we would love to give you more information. Check out this video that describes how to get in the game.
