The bulk of STAAR testing begins this week. Wylie ISD students are taught by the best teachers on the planet; we believe in our students, and we believe in our teachers. We know the scores will be great!
When it comes to STAAR, Wylie ISD students are among the top performers in Texas. Campuses in Wylie ISD have earned fifty-five state Academic Distinctions, second only to Highland Park ISD. No matter how prepared students may be for tests like STAAR, stress and anxiety can still impact them and cause them to feel an overwhelming sense of pressure. Psychologists report that anxiety and stress are the leading diagnosis for both kids and adults throughout the country. By working together, we can help to ease the minds of the students and teachers we serve while offering ways to cope with any apprehension which may be present.
Academic success is important. In Wylie ISD, we believe that preparing our kids for life is just as important. Stressful times, like taking these assessments, will always be a part of our lives—teaching our kids how to handle stress in a positive way is essential to their success in school and in life. Dr. Kelly Jameson, psychologist, says the best way we can reduce stress for our children is to model the kind of behavior we desire for them to exhibit.
Dr. Jameson also reminds parents that the best methods of approaching the topic of stress with kids can be different for boys and girls. When facing challenges, parents should not assume that kids have the same perspective as adults. Sometimes, it is important to remember that children may see things through a different lens and therefore view the world in a different way. By listening to our children, we can help to navigate their emotions and better support them through the trials that come their way.

In our most recent podcast, Student Anxiety & Stress, Dr. Jameson elaborates on how we can identify when our kids are stressed, offers ideas regarding how to approach our children and their needs, and specifies when to get help. We encourage you to listen to the podcast and enjoy this great conversation.
We value the work you do as parents, and we thank you for your continued support in helping our children to live happy and healthy lives. Preparing your kiddos for a prosperous and meaningful life is the Wylie Way. Good luck on STAAR!
